OK. This is a bit radical, but why do we have departments in companies.
Is it really because work is so complex that no one person can do everything ?
Or is it because some people are so good that if you don't restrain them from doing everything a lot of people would become redundant.
Or is it because some people are so bad that they need departmental boundaries to retreat behind to defend their work and justify their existence.
Or is it born from man's desire for empire building - once you get two strong people in a company you have to give them their own empires or they will fight to death to rule the single entity.
Or is it because people are so untrustworthy that until you put them in competing departments and set them against each other with conflicting KPIs they will all con the company.
Or is it because we've always done it this way.
Like I said, a bit radical - and I don't think I believe any of this myself. But one wonders sometimes - that's all.
Come to think of it, why do we have countries......
