"Write Think Learn"

I'm a great believer in the power of good writing.

It's not just about the writing itself - if you write well about something, you're probably thinking clearly about it too - it's all linked.

I discovered a document today that captures these ideas brilliantly. Its titled: How to Write More Clearly, Think More Clearly, and Learn Complex Material More Easily (PDF link)

(by Michael A. Covington at the Artificial Intelligence Center - The University of Georgia.)

Just to whet the appetite, here are some choice quotes from it:

Clear writing leads to clear thinking.
  • You don’t know what you know until you try to express it.
  • If your writing is nonsense, maybe your thoughts are nonsense too!

Good writing is partly a matter of character.
Instead of doing what’s easy for you, do what’s easy for your reader.

Three rules for clear writing:
  1. Get to the point.
  2. Get to the point.
  3. Get to the point.
Your reader won’t follow you down a garden path.

Plenty more good stuff in the document - well worth a read.
