The Dark Knight has several memorable quotes. One of my favorites is where the Joker says:
“Nobody panics when things go "according to plan"… even if the plan is horrifying”.
I love it !
I’ve seen this so many times at work – over the years, in different companies, in different situations. There appears to be an inherent comfort in sticking to a plan – which is fine as long as it is a good plan. But more often than not it isn’t – plans are approximations – they shouldn't even be called plans really because if you plan to stick to the plan at every cost you’ve already divorced yourself from any changes in your environment.
Plans rot with time, they become out of date, out of synch with reality, they age, they atrophy. But perversely, the more things are falling apart around us, the more we seek the comfort and familiarity of a plan – no matter how flawed.
When we cling too hard to plans, we sometimes forget that the plan is not the point – the point is what you are trying to achieve.
