History of Work Ethic

I was railing again about the 9-to-5 routine and where did it come from, when it was pointed out to me (by Uzma, thanks) that there is in fact a history behind it, and that it is often attributed to the Protestant work ethic.

After some more poking around on the web, I ran across this: Historical Context of the Work Ethic (Roger B. Hill, Ph.D.).

It’s a fascinating history of the work ethic from Greek times all the way to the twentieth century. I will not attempt to summarize it here – it is a highly engaging article and deserves a full read. It’s good to step back and put things in context and to realize that what we practice today has been shaped by centauries of social evolution.

Recommended.
